Sam was a 2 sport athlete in high school, playing basketball and baseball. He played Division IA baseball at Davidson College, where he was a pitcher and a catcher. Before finishing his baseball career, he spent 1 year in the Orioles development organization, playing in Aberdeen, MD. He met his wife playing volleyball at the Vienna Community Center over 20 years ago. They formed a team and played in the Fairfax County Adult league for over 10 years. He played men's and co-ed BB, where he set for the men's team and was a pin-hitter for the co-ed team. He has coached competitive sports at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in baseball, basketball, football, and volleyball for over 30 years. He is currently one of the coaches for the CHRVA Beach High-Performance program and the assistant volleyball coach for both the freshman and varsity teams at Woodson High School. Lastly, Sam is a member of AVCA and has the following volleyball coaching certifications: USAV CAP II, USA
