NVVA Announces First Executive Director

NVVA is pleased to announce that Jeff Billington will be our club’s first Executive Director.  The Board of Directors, after an extensive search, chose Jeff because it feels that he is the best suited person to lead NVVA as the club continues to build the top club volleyball program in this area. Upon hearing that he will be NVVA’s Executive Director, Jeff Billington remarked, “I am honored to be selected the Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association. It is my intent to up hold the “mission” of NVVA at every level by promoting the game of volleyball to all ages.”

Jeff comes to NVVA after leading the UNC Pembroke’s women’s volleyball team and teaching sports related classes (Exercise Physiology, Sports Psychology, Organization and Administration of P.E. and Sport). Prior to coaching and teaching at UNCP, Jeff taught and head coached at Frostburg State University for four years. Locally, Jeff coached at Paul VI high school in Fairfax for four years, was an assistant for the men’s volleyball team at George Mason University, and the women’s volleyball program at Marymount University. He taught P.E. at Longfellow Middle School and W.T.Woodson High School. He also coached club volleyball for Western Maryland Juniors in the early 1990’s.

Jeff brings a wealth of experience having been a teacher and coach both at the high school and collegiate level. Of course, Jeff is very versed in the collegiate recruiting process and having coached at the collegiate level also knows what it takes to prepare players to not only be recruited by colleges, but also to prepare and succeed as a collegiate athlete. His extensive knowledge of training athletes and preparing them for the next level includes published articles, as well as CAP level 1 and 2 certifications. He is a member of AVCA and USAV and was a USA HP camp coach in 2011.

His role at NVVA will be to take the club into an even brighter future by continuing the foundation built over the last years. Much planning will take place immediately, however, Jeff has done his research and talked with people so he can hit the ground running. He states that his intent for the club is  “to continue to provide our coaches with the best training and resources so they may create an atmosphere that they will come to know as the “NVVA way”. The athletes will experience a learning atmosphere that is positive, fun, motivating, and efficient; an environment that will continue to encourage our athletes to excel and reach their true potential.”

Several of this area’s athletes and coaches may know Jeff Billington because they’ve participated in his volleyball camps, which Jeff ran successfully over the last several years at UNCP (http://www.billingtonvolleyball.net). Jeff’s ties to the Northern Virginia area are very strong and he is excited to take on a new challenge of helping NVVA build on its foundation and success. Jeff has a track record of building competitive and successful programs while fostering a positive culture that values integrity.

President of NVVA, Cathy Murdick notes, “An executive director who is dedicated to the mission and vision of NVVA is what is the next best step for our club. We believe we have found the right candidate in Jeff Billington.” Jeff knows that leading the Region’s largest volleyball club, which offers well over 1000 athletes the opportunity to play the sport is a big job, yet one with great opportunity. NVVA encompasses 50 girls and 4 boys teams this past season, as well as numerous youth programs spanning from ages 3-18 and beginning levels to college bound athletes. Jeff states “There is a lot to accomplish over the next few years and I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the members of NVVA so we can move forward on developing our future plan and continue to build NVVA into a quintessential volleyball club.”

NVVA plans to introduce Jeff to coaches, parents and players by holding a town hall on Thursday, June 14 and Friday June 15 at 7 p.m. at the Virginia Volleyball Center (VVC) located at 45685 Oakbrook Court, Sterling, VA.

The future is very bright for NVVA as we charge ahead to offer the best, most comprehensive youth volleyball programs for a wide spectrum of kids!
