What is Club Volleyball?

At NVVA we define club volleyball as competitive teams for intermediate to advanced skill level athletes that are ready to invest more time and energy in volleyball. Club volleyball teams have a busier practice and tournament schedule and a longer season than recreational leagues.

If you are not familiar with club volleyball age groups and levels, don't worry, it's normal and we are here to help.

Should I join a team?

Club volleyball is ideal for athletes that have already had some experience playing and participating in leagues, camps, or clinics. Playing club volleyball is a 6 to 8 month commitment to weekly practices and weekend tournaments. Families should only commit to participating if they fully understand the commitments club volleyball requires.

If you haven't played much volleyball before, we recommend that you participate in our Galaxy League or some of our camps or classes. Our coaches are always looking for talented athletes. If we see potential in you, one of our staff members will contact your family to talk about your next options, including club volleyball.

What are the costs?

Costs will depend on which team level better fits your athlete's abilities. At NVVA we divide our club teams into three different levels.

Level Red: Red teams practice twice a week from mid-November through May and play their tournaments exclusively at the Virginia Volleyball Center. The average cost is $325 per month.

Level Black: teams that practice three times per week from mid-November through May and play tournaments further away, but still within driving distances. The average cost is $780 per month.

X-Performance: the highest level of play at NVVA. Teams practice volleyball three times per week, have conditioning twice per week, from mid-November through June and play tournaments further away including distances requiring flying. The average cost is $445 per month*

What is included in the cost?

* The X-Performance program is NVVA's flagship program, created to allow any player committed to volleyball to participate. The fees for this program are lower due to sponsorship from NVVA and other partners. Athletes that participate in this program are required to maintain academic and athletic excellence and to volunteer in our community.

What level is best for me?

The best level is the one that fits the athlete's skills, abilities or potential, family budget, and ability to commit time to practice and tournament days. Athletes will be invited to a team by a coach/NVVA staff invitation or by participating in our tryout process. Either way, we will let you know what team level better fits your athlete. Accepting a position on a team is a big family decision and you should always make sure you have all your questions answered before committing. If you have any questions, please schedule time with our athlete success team.

Tryouts

Tryouts usually take place in the first week of November. To increase your chances to get placed on a team, it is very important that 1) you attend fall clinics with your desired age group and 2) Come to the earliest possible tryout date.

There is a $55 non-refundable tryout fee

How Should I Prepare?

To prepare for tryouts, athletes usually participate in our fall clinics on Sunday. These clinics are coached by our club volleyball coaches. During the clinics, athletes and coaches have a chance to get to know each other's playing and coaching styles. If a coach believes that your athlete is a perfect match for their team, he or she may notify NVVA staff to contact your family to talk about the next steps.

NVVA also offers skills classes and private lessons through NVVA Plus.
