Northern Virginia Volleyball Association is pleased to announce the 2018-19 Coaching Staff. Over the last few years, NVVA has been striving to develop the most elite training programs with the most qualified staff.
This year, our 18 ICE team will be led by Coach Pepê Costa who played professional beach volleyball, brought the Qatari National Beach Volleyball team to their first ever Olympic appearance, and was heavily involved in the beach volleyball scene in Paraguay and Brazil. He will be assisted by Coach Eric Johnson who will also be coaching for his 2nd year at George Mason University.
16 ICE is headed by Coach Rodrigo Gomes. He brings his impressive volleyball background, playing both indoor and beach volleyball professionally, for the Brazilian junior's national team, and outside hitter and eventually, assistant coach for the three-time national champion Brigham Young University. Coach Gomes also served as Director of Camps and Coaches Clinics for Gold Medal Squared and Technical Director for top clubs in the country including the national champion TCA and NVVA, totaling 13 years of coaching experience. He is excited to be moving up to the 16s age group after a successful year with 15 ICE. Coach Gomes commented, “This will be my third year with the same group and I’m very excited to help them to continue accomplishing their volleyball goals.”
Coach Adam Paul will be moving forward to fill the position of 15 ICE Head Coach for his 11th year with NVVA after a season working with our 17 Select team in the 2017-18 season. Springfield College graduate, Coach Eric Johnson will be assisting this team this year as well. Also moving from 14 Select to ICE will be Coach Nicole Buchholz Cervantes who stated, “I’m excited about starting my second coaching season with NVVA. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get back to the club that started my career in volleyball and provided me with so many great opportunities. I’m looking forward to coaching 14 ICE and challenging the area’s best athletes to achieve their highest potential”. Coach Nicole has 9 years of college coaching experience first with Southeast Missouri State and now as the assistant coach at George Washington University for the last 2 years.
After changing age groups last year, Coach Casey Kelly will continue to coach the 13s age group, but this time as a member of the ICE division. After a great season in 2017-2018, Coach Casey looks forward to staying with the 13s age group for her 8th year with NVVA.
Our Select division coaches are no less impressive with 2017-18 Coach of the Year, Coach Michael Garrison, moving up to 17 Select this season to continue his winning season with 16 Select last year. Our in-house doctor, Coach Bruce Short will be taking over the 16 Select team following a great season with Coach Garrison. Coach Ginny Rizzo who is still an active and successful player will stay with her 15 Select team this season. Similarly, Coach Esther Burgess who played semi-professionally in Thailand will continue with the 14s again this year. 13 Select will be led by Coach Norman Cummins who has been very active in the NVVA community for many years. Two-time Coach of the Year winner, Coach Hannah Vick will return to lead 12 Select through another amazing season, after leading her 2017-18 team to two semifinal finishes and many other victories at such tournaments as Capitol Hill Classic and Monument City Classic.
We wish all of our teams the best of luck this season and we thank our coaches for all that they do for us.
